AND I`M HOPING THAT YOU KNOW THAT 'til now , i always got by on my own
Aeden stared unhappily at the bookshelf in front of her, her usually bright gaze scanning the titles of the books. Books about Camelot and King Arthur and Excalibur, books about hidden secrets and murders and lust, books about teenage love and the beach on warm summer afternoons and first kisses and holding hands in the rain. The latter titles made a knot form deep in Aeden's throat. Brandon. God, she missed him. She couldn't sleep, she couldn't eat, could barely breathe. Yes, she had been the one to dump him, but Aeden really did love him. She loved the way his hair fell in his face when he dipped his head to kiss her, loved the low whistle that escaped his lips when he didn't know what else to say, loved the way his big, strong hands could just grip her, gently. She loved him.
But, even though she loved him, truly loved him, Aeden knew that it couldn't last. Her combination of bright, unusual attire and sunny personality attracted lots of stares from her peers, and Brandon was a guy who didn't like having lots of attention directed at him. He was usually with Aeden, so he shared a lot of looks from everybody that happened to notice Aeden. He kept asking her to tone it down, but she could never figure out what toning it down actually meant. The last straw was last week, when he asked her if she could please, just be normal for once. They were going to a party, Brandon's birthday party. It was mostly his family that was invited, Brandon didn't have many friends. He insisted on going with Aeden to go pick out a dress, but point-blank brought down anything she liked. It was either too colourful, too impractical, too short, too weird.
He didn't understand that Aeden was a star. She would burn brightly until she could shine no more.
Brandon was the practical one. He often talked about what they were going to do when they left high school and college and university and moving to the city and buying a nice house or an apartment and jobs and getting a dog and maybe settling down and starting a family once they had their lives under control. This annoyed Aeden, she had to admit. She lived in the now, she hated being bombarded with people asking her what she wanted to do when she got older. She wanted to be happy. That was all.
Aeden plucked a book off the shelf, gathering it in her arms along with three other books. She made her way to the history section, to check out one of those books. She always did, it was routine. Aeden was thirsty for knowledge about her heritage, about the Magus. It was difficult, seeing as you couldn't learn about them from modern books. Vampyres (incorrectly spelled "vampires") and werewolves were all the rage now. But, the fact that witches weren't as widely popular as the other two species meant that there wasn't a lot of fiction to bloom urban legends and stupid things like the idea that vampyres sparkle. Witches and warlocks didn't matter anymore, and nobody really knew what a wizard was anyway. But, it was better that way, Aeden had to admit. It was better that fewer people knew the traits of magks rather that have magyk-lovers running around like Taylor Lautner's fan girls. Besides, Magus were the most easy assimilated with humans, because there was honestly nothing funny about them, except the occasional spell or power development, and the experienced ones knew how to hide it.
Unfortunately, Aeden would rather practice magyk than practice suppressing it. As she thought of Brandon and everything that had happened over the past week, she felt a cold gust of wind blow around her. The windows were closed, but Aeden knew it was her doing.
Her eyes brimming with tears as she thought about Brandon, she started walking quicker, refusing to let anyone see her cry. She didn't bother to look where she was going, she could navigate around the library in her sleep, in the dark. She cried out softly as she ran headlong into someone. "Sorry, sorry." She mumbled. Wiping away her tears, she looked up into the eyes of the person she had just run into. "Shit." She swore under her breath. In front of her was a man, an extremely beautiful man. But not only that, he was a warlock. She could sense the electric aura around him. Aeden knew to walk away, mortals were unconsciously drawn to stare whenever two magyks were together. But, she didn't. Aeden just stood there, staring at him, watching him stare back at her. "Well, it's been great seeing you." She said quietly, trying to put a smile on her face. "I'm going to, uh, go." She continued, the smile back. "Bye."

Gair spent a lot of time at the library. That wasn't something a lot of guys his age did, but Gair wasn't like guys his age. He preferred the quiet and seclusion that he got in the library. There he wasn't always being bothered or hassled or even talked to. He was left alone, and could just sit and read for hours on end. No one told him what needed to be done or that he needed to get working. No one ever bothered him when he was there, and he liked that.
Gair preferred to be on his own than around people. People were loud, bossy and constantly rushing. They lived life as if it were a race, ad he couldn't stand it. Animals were different. They understood that life wasn't about who had the most, or who got the newest thing first. Animals understood things that humans never would, and that's why Gair was a vet. He loved working with animals, taking care of them, making them live better, longer and happier lives. It gave him a sense of purpose, and a feeling of calm that being around people never gave him.
None of this meant that he liked seeing someone upset though. So when the girl who was close to tears walked into him he wanted to help her. He could sense automatically that she was a witch, the air between them practically crackled with magyk, but even the knowledge that their presence would cause people to stare didn't deter him.
"Hey," He said softly, reaching out and gently putting a hand on her arm, "What's wrong? Are you hurt?" Gair didn't like seeing people cry, but seeing this girl fight against her tears and pretend she was okay was worse than if she was crying openly. It was as if se felt that crying was wrong, when really it was necessary. You would never know exactly how much you were hurt, until you knew how long you cried. Gair was a strong believer of this, so seeing the young girl fighting the tears made him flinch. "You... You can trust me." He spoke softly, the way he would to a scared and hurt animal. Trying to gain trust, showing he wasn't a threat. People and animals were that different after all. They all felt love, hate... And therefore, pain, and that was where Gair tried to help.

AND I`M HOPING THAT YOU KNOW THAT 'til now , i always got by on my own
Aeden looked determinedly at her feet, refusing not to cry. She wasn't used to crying in front of people, and it made her feel weak. She couldn't control herself. Why was this so important to her, anyway? Brandon was a stupid boy, and they were over. They were over, they were over, they were over. She had to stop living in the past, and live for the future. 'Carpe diem', hadn't that always been her motto? 'No day but today', hadn't she been raised with that? So why was she so blatantly refusing to leave her past behind?
As the man in front of her told her asked her if she was alright she sighed. Aeden ran both of her hands through her hair. "You could call it that." She replied at last, hugging herself. "Just stupid teenager stuff." Aeden looked up at him, meeting his gaze. "Bad breakup." She said simply. Really bad. You're a wreck. Her conscience chirped.
His eyes were dark brown, practically an onyx black, and shone with an intensity that she couldn't place. Oh, why couldn't she have the power to read minds? Hiding a semi-frustrated look, she bit her bottom lip and looked at the floor. The tips of her fingers began to tingle. She wanted to fly away, fly away, fly away. Aeden burned with the desire to run away, to fly. Fly, fly, fly. She uttered a small sigh. She was a flier, she could fly. She wanted to, so much. But, she hadn't done it in forever, and in Port Arcana, that was a really bad choice of place to start up again. Somebody would see, and then everybody, meaning everybody, would be in for it.
Aeden possessed three powers, which was not uncommon for Magi. Clairvoyancy, illusionism, flight. She rarely used illusionism and flight, as much as she wanted to. Clairvoyancy, she couldn't control. Her friends thought that she was just prone to migraines, but she saw flashes of things. Out of context, of course, just snippets of what was yet to come.
Aeden looked back up into this stranger's eyes. Concern. That was what it was. His eyes shone with a genuine concern. Would it be considered normal for her to know that? Yes? No? Maybe? Kind of?
But then again, nothing about Port Arcana was normal.
Aeden sighed as he told her he could trust her. "Look, uhm..." She shifted from foot to foot. "I'm sure that I can trust you, and you're probably a great guy and all, but I don't even know you." She rubbed the back of her neck, feeling more awkward than ever.
"Besides," She said quietly, almost too quiet for him to hear. "I usually deal with things alone. It's okay, really." She bit her lip. "I don't have many people around me who I can talk to. I've learned how to figure things out myself." Her voice tapered off, Aeden feeling like she was going to cry again.
But she wasn't going to cry. She wasn't going to cry.
She couldn't cry.

Gair nodded sympathetically when she said she'd just been through a bad breakup, he knew all about those. Giving everything he had to the girl he loved, and getting nothing back from her except a stupid text message saying that she was leaving him for her ex. She was a bitch, but Gair still loved her. Oh why did he still love her?
He shook his head absently to clear his thoughts as he looked down at her. She looked about sixteen or seventeen, and as if she were carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. Gair could only imagine she was feeling overwhelmed. Not only was magyk very unpredictable at that age but to combine that power with heartbreak... That was a recipe for disaster.
"Oh right, I'm sorry, I haven't introduced myself," He said with a small smile before he held his hand out to shake her's, "I'm Gair Procella." Then in a quieter voice he added, "Of the Nox Coven. She was a witch, so she would know exactly what that meant, and who he was.
He listened quietly to what she said next and nodded before speaking, "Everyone should have someone they can talk to, because we can't always be strong, and sometimes we need someone else to be strong for us." Gair knew he probably sounded very strange, but he just couldn't bear seeing someone so upset. It was like when he saw an animal in distress, he just had to do everything he could to help. The difference was Gair could communicate with any animal easily, he could understand and connect with them, and yet he could barely understand humans. Animals were so much more peaceful, their problems were not covered in layers and layers like humans', and animals were willing to accept help, not like humans.

AND I`M HOPING THAT YOU KNOW THAT 'til now , i always got by on my own
Aeden sighed, brushing her thick brown hair out of her eyes before returning his handshake. She locked eyes with him, his gaze dark and intense, her own, shy, with it's usual strangely piercing quality.
"Gair." She tested out his name on her tongue. His name was short, sharp, sweet, foreign. Her native British accent softened the 'r' at the end, leaving the sound open, airy, like a dream. "I'm Aeden." She replied, her own name familiar in her mouth. "Aeden Pulchra." She folded the fingers on her left hand in towards her palm. save for her index and middle fingers, which she crossed. Aeden held her newly made hand sign horizontally against her lips, dropping her hand as soon as she saw recognition in his eyes. The sign for her coven, Pax, was easy to remember, and the Coven name was rarely spoken aloud.
When Gair spoke his cheesy little monologue about everyone needing someone to be strong for them when they themselves couldn't be, Aeden couldn't help but wonder if that hadn't been in a movie script at least once. She gave a small sigh, refusing once again to cry in front of him.
"Yes, I know we all need someone to be strong for us." She responded, hugging herself again. "But, I don't have that." She looked Gair squarely in the eye. "So I have to be strong for myself." She sighed. "When I can't be strong, I just deal with it." Aeden said quietly. "I'm used to being alone." She said, her voice calm and measured, careful not to let too much emotion slip out.
But even as she battled fiercely against her own feelings, Aeden felt an icy breeze curl around her legs. As she dropped her hands to her sides she felt a few stray raindrops fall silently to the floor. She quickly clenched her fists, using all her might to concentrate on keeping the elements at bay.
Unfortunately for her, Aeden was so set on resting the elements that she was unconscious to her own feelings. They had had enough of sharing the young witch's attention with the natural world. As Aeden felt the rain cease and the wind halt, she was aware of a few rebellious tears, making their defiant journey down her face. Aeden also couldn't help but notice that the other people in the library had taken to staring at the two specters. The gawking mortals in the space would assume that it was because there was a young girl crying in front of an attractive man, but it was because of the electric auras of the two Magyks.
"S-sorry." Aeden whispered, looking up from her feet, back at Gair. "I, um, I've troubled you enough." She hurriedly apologized. She just wanted to go away, to be hugged, to be loved, to find somebody to be strong for her. Brandon hadn't been strong for her, but nothing bad had ever happened with him there.
But now, Aeden was alone.

Gair listened to her quietly, hands folded in front of him, looking at her intently with dark eyes. And then, a quick thought flitted through his mind. Cheesy little monologue.... Movie script... And that was it. The thought was not Gair's, but he was used to these random thoughts by now, he was a mind reader after all. Usually he had peoples' entire conversations with themselves running through their minds, but most magical beings were good at protecting their minds, and Aeden, as he had just discovered her name was, was particularly good at it, considering her age.
"What I just said, I didn't take it from a movie," He spoke quietly, his gaze never leaving her's, "I'm not one of those guys who, sees chick flicks just to spout the lines to try and impress girls." After speaking he nodded slowly, accepting what she said about being alone. Accepting, but not liking, there was a difference. It was Gair's belief that everyone needed someone, and if you were forced to be strong for too long, you would break.
Then things got out of control. Gair could see her struggling, fighting to keep her emotions in check, but that meant she wasn't focusing on her power, and soon drops of rain were falling around her feet. She was an element controller, which was one of the more unpredictable bits of magyk they could possess. As Aeden got control of the elements Gair noticed a few tears escape her eyes, but he pretended not to notice. Instead he looked up to see the number of spectators staring at them. The electricity that sparked between them was drawing the attention of the non-Magyks, something that always happened.
"It's no trouble," He said quietly, And I'm sorry for intruding. It's really none of my business." He let out a small, humourless laugh. "But here's a bit of advice. Animals, are really good listeners. And, you might not exactly be able to have a conversation, but they're good at picking up on emotions. Just, keep it in mind. I know it sounds crazy, but next time you see a bird, or a rabbit, talk to it. You can spill your heart out, and they'll never breath a word, and you'l feel better, trust me." Yes Gair probably sounded insane, but as an actual animal communicator he knew better than anyone how easy it was to trust and confide in animals. It gave you a sense of relief and allowed you to move on. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, or even next week, but eventually, you could move on.

AND I`M HOPING THAT YOU KNOW THAT 'til now , i always got by on my own
Another small, sad sigh escaped Aeden once more, her eyes scrunched closed as she tried not to cry. Once she was finally able to control her emotions and the elements, she reopened them, twin golden brown stars boring into Gair's. Her gaze connected with his once again, and then she saw it. The shadow that moved, like a small, black fire, hidden in his irises. Her was a mind reader. That was the last thing she needed right now, somebody searching through her mind, picking through her thoughts, ripping through her.
Aeden quickly tensed up, the shield around her mind strengthening. She couldn't let him read her mind, she couldn't let him read her mind, she couldn't let him read her mind, she couldn't let him read her mind...
And then the telltale white mist started clouding her vision. All she could see were Gair's eyes, boring into her, their intensity stabbing right through her. Not now, please not now. She prayed in her mind. The problem with being clairvoyant was well, the whole deal. Enigmatic future events appeared to her in waves, often appearing when she least wanted to them. She could rarely distinguish between a vision and a migraine. Also, they were puzzles, riddles, often just scenes that she intruded on. They were impossible to figure out. And she never knew how long they'd take to finish.
"Excuse me," She said breathlessly, knowing that her eyes were cloudy, soon her irises would turn a bright, silvery colour. They always did. Aeden dropped her armload of books at her feet and starting to walk away, her hands gripping the bookshelves for support. She was feeling heavy, tired, scared, like she couldn't move. But she couldn't go under in front of all these people, she had to get to a safe place.
Once she had gotten into the stairwell, she collapsed, her breathing shallow. Aeden was slightly comforted that people rarely used the staircase now, not since the elevators had been installed four months ago. As her vision formed, her body crumpled against the floor, limp as a rag doll. This was going to be more than a vision, it was going to be a nightmare. She thought one word, one name, as loudly as she could.
Gair.
And then, Aeden blacked out.
